A powerful force for social good

Discovery’s core purpose is to enhance and protect people’s lives. This purpose is central to our thinking and drives our behaviour as an organisation.

Every year, Discovery chooses a charity to be aligned to the Discovery Leadership Summit, which benefits through our corporate social responsibility programme.

We have been proud to reduce the carbon emissions generated by this event by planting the equivalent of 11 hectares of urban forest. We have also supported environmental education in rural and developing areas of South Africa.

The Umthombo Youth Development Foundation

The shortage of qualified healthcare professionals in rural areas is a well-documented fact and a serious challenge for South Africa’s healthcare sector. The Umthombo Youth Development Foundation is a highly successful and innovative model that identifies, develops and retains scarce medical skills in rural areas. The programme’s high success rate can be attributed to its model of mentorship, partnership with schools and hospitals, financial support and gathering commitment to work at rural hospitals. Rural youth who qualify as healthcare professionals work at one of the 11 hospitals in the Umkhanyakude, Zululand, Uthungulu or Sisonke districts in return for the opportunity they had to study a health science qualification.

Umthombo provides comprehensive mentoring and financial support to rural students during their studies, and assists them to integrate into the hospital working environment, and become professional healthcare workers on graduation.

The Foundation offers a long-term solution to the challenge of recruiting and retaining quality health care professionals in South Africa's rural areas. Research has shown that health professionals are more likely to choose working at a rural hospital if that is where they come from, or, if they are exposed to the realities of rural healthcare delivery during their university training.

DISCOVERING TRUE POTENTIAL

This year the Discovery Leadership Summit is proud to announce that R200 will be contributed to the Umthombo Youth Development Foundation, for every ticket sold to the summit. By being part of the summit, delegates will ensure that scarce medical skills are identified, developed and retained in rural parts of South Africa.
